Circuta maculata (Water Hemlock, Spotted Cowbane) is closely related to Poison Hemlock (Circuta virosa). Both of these plants are very poisonous. It is highly dangerous to ingest any part of the plant. The roots are particlarly poisonous. Water Hemlock a semi-aquatic plant that grows along streams. It is found in the North Alabama area.
Water Hemlock is a perennial growing to 2 feet tall, with a hollow rootstock, similar in shape to a parsnip. The lower leaves are tripinnate and large. The upper leaves are smaller anddivided into three leaflets. The very small white flowers are whitegrow on an large umbel.
