The Redbud plant is a small understory tree that is numerous in our forests and also is used extensively for urban landscaping. It is very noticeable in early spring because of the reddish color that shows up before spring leafing. The color is mainly from the buds, which are a darker red than the small petals, which are very light pink. The red buds give the tree its common name.
Redbud trees can be found in many front yards of residential homes. It is also a common understory species in wild wooded areas. Look for the heart shaped leaf.
