PLANT DESCRIPTION:

Oxalis violacea, called wood sorrel, is a low growing plant with palmately compound leaves. The leaves are the shape of a shamrock and sometimes cause misidentification of the plant as a clover. The plant contains oxalic acid, which gives the leaves a pleasant sour taste. The attractive flowers are a violet hue and are observed during April and May. Wood sorrel grows best in open areas where sunlight is available. Another related oxalis plant is the common Yellow Oxalis, (Oxalis corniculata) also called Creeping Wood Sorrel. Yellow Oxalis has alternate leaves.
