Other names for Bellwort are perfoliate bellwort, merry bells, cowbells and wood daffodil.
Bellwort grows from a underground rhizomes, to a height of a foot or more.
The leaves are a glossy green and the 6 pointed, bell shaped flowers are
light yellow. Blooming occurs mostly in May. The flowers are about an inch
long. The stems appear to be growing right through the leaves (perfoliate).
Bellwort can be propagated by transplanting the rhizomes or by seed. The
seeds will germinate in 30 to 60 days.
Bellwort has been used for many medical problems including snakebite, sore
mouth, and various infections.
Another bellwort found in Alabama is Uvalaria sessilifolia which, as the
name implies, is sessile (no stem) but not perfoliate. This species is
called Wild Oats. .
