| 1804 JOHN HUNT TRIP MAP
| N WALKER
|
John Hunt and Andrew Bean left Tazewell, in East Tennessee in September 1804 on a scouting trip to find settlement lands to the southwest. They traveled by foot. Almost a month later they scouted the area near Old Salem in Franklin Co. Tennessee. From here they proceeded further southwest and visited a new settler near present day New Market, Alabama. Here they learned of a "Big Spring" a short distance to the south. After exploring the Big Spring area, John Hunt returned to Tazewell and prepared for his return the next year with family and friends for permanent settlement
at Big Spring. The settlement flourished and took the name "Huntsville" in honor of John Hunt, its founder. Unfortunately, a few years later Hunt lost his property at Big Spring because he had failed to register it properly. Andrew Bean settled at Old Salem.
